Living Colorfully

It's funny, but in the past when I put on a few pounds I would often shy away from color and live in black dresses. I decided to make an effort this summer to keep living as colorfully as I pleased. I picked up this embroidered white beach cover up dress in-store at Burlington for just $14.99. It's actually supposed to be worn off the shoulder but I prefer it this way. It went on sale online to just $2.99 but sold out quickly. Usually I get annoyed when I buy something right before markdowns but I was more than happy to pay "full price" and would do it again.

I've been buying a lot of beach/pool cover ups and wearing them with slips (I actually purchased the nude half slip I'm wearing here also at Burlington for less than $10). It's so much cheaper than buying the similar lined dress versions for often triple to quadruple the price.

From head to toe:
  • Sunglasses: Trudy bifocal sun reader, Readers.com, C/O (RV $20.95)
  • Dress: Burlington, $14.99
  • Bag: TJ Maxx, $12.99
  • Bracelet: A.V. Max, sample sale, $10 (RV $55)
  • Shoes: Donald J Pliner Fairy slides, C/O (RV $218)

Shop my style here:

My embroidered pouch from TJ Maxx is probably one of my favorite finds of the summer. The colors pop and the colorful pom poms add the perfect amount of kitsch.

I also wanted to share how excited I am for Ella who just broke 2K on Instagram. She was the one who shot my pictures that day, so I reciprocated by shooting her with some of her new Justice summer goodies. They sent her the towel and tube as a part of her "Girls with Heart" brand ambassador program and she's been enjoying them all summer. Her reversible bikini (it's also tie dye) is also Justice, which we purchased for $10 when they had a recent swimsuit promotion.

The only sample sale on my radar right now is Fivestory - their off-site sale usually has designer goodies for 70-90% off retail. I've actually skipped this sale in the past but my friends have always cleaned up at this one. Otherwise, Zara got another markdown but I expect at least one more markdown. I would suggest stopping by sooner than later for best selection - but check again at the end for lots of super cheap stuff. Clear the Rack is also on right now at Nordstrom Rack and in addition to 25% off all red sticker clearance, dresses are 50% off! I went to NYC and didn't find anything at Union Square but at my local Bergen Rack, I found a couple super cheap Rag and Bone fedoras for less than $20 each!

What have been your favorite recent sale finds? I would love some cheap Gucci but I'm not holding my breath.

Happy shopping!

Michelle

  1. No more hiding behind black mrs!!! Besides I'm not sure what you're hiding as you look stunning! I love that you're wearing this OTS as a regular cover up instead and despite the drop in the price, it still was a bargain. Huge congratulations to your daughter who hit 2K on Instagram. That's a LOT for someone her age and she (and you) are by sure proud of her!
And nope, no Gucci sale in sight although I'm as eager for one as you are! Keep me updated if you find any though, haha.

Also, love the pics and I think you look gorgeous and there's no need to wear black if you've gain a couple extra pounds, I'm there myself where almost nothing fits, and I'm trying not to wear black all the time as well hahaha

    1. I know! Clearly I have to watch Burlington for markdowns! Just buy a few new things if nothing fits - makes it so much easier than feeling bad that nothing does.

  7. Aww I love the boho tribal vibes of your outfit especially that bright pink clutch hun! And wow congrats to Ella who broke 2k on IG - she's a rising star!! I haven't shopped for quite a while cuz I'm working on my wellness and investing on my health and skincare instead hehe. The sales find has got to be my premium starter kit for therapeutic grade essential oils cuz it comes with a free diffuser. My house smells pleasant everyday and I'm so glad those oils work well for my skin too :)

  8. It is quite fun that you decided to go with more colorful clothes, I think it looks fabulous on you. I can't believe that it went to $2 sale, I wish I could get my hands on it. I bet a lot of awesome sales going on right now. Your daughter should be a model, she is pretty good at it!

    1. The slides were from a blogger event where they gifted us shoes. It's one of the benefits of living near NYC where most showrooms are located :)

  10. Ahaha, I know that so well, coz I'm living in black dresses all the time. This is my safe spot, haha! And it's also very stylish :) But this dress however looks absolutely adorable and perfect for hot summer days.
Dare I say, that this clutch is an absolute gem! I love it! It just brightens up the whole look. And how great it would look with a black dress, right? :) I just need this clutch, I hope we have it in our TK MAXX store.

    Great look, babe, as always!

    1. LBD's always feel like home to me which is why I've been pushing outside my comfort zone. And yes - people stop me on the street when they see this bag - it's kinda epic and you can't beat $12.99!

  11. Ugh I know the feeling of buying at full price, then seeing it marked down. Did you try asking for a price adjustment? A lot of times, stores will honor it if the mark down happens within 7-14 days or purchase. Regardless though that cover up is such a great purchase, and it's so clever how you paired it with a slip underneath! I often do the same. Do you have a slip dress brand recommendation btw? Perfect pairing with that colorful pouch as well. Such a cute summer look! And a big congrats to Ella as well! She styled everything adorably :)

    1. I didn't - I would do it at retail but most discounters don't offer that option anyway. And my new favorite black slip was a splurge for $50 from Victoria's Secret of all places but it fits like a dream! My nude slip was from a Zara sale dress - I kept it just for the slip LOL.
